GCSEC BIOLOGY EDUCATION ADVISORY COMMITTEE

COMMITTEE DESCRIPTION
Version 1.2 12 January 1999

PURPOSE:

To contribute to development of an education center within the GCSEC concept and to maintain an on-going and mutually beneficial dialogue between GCSEC and grades K-16 biology teachers throughout the Tristate region.

COMMITTEE SIZE AND ORGANIZATION:

In each grade level group one person should if possible represent instruction in each of Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana.

Each committee member should be a member of at least one professional biology education organization, such as the National Association of Biology Teachers (NABT) or as an alternative the American Institute of Biological Sciences (AIBS) or the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) or one of its state or local affiliates, the Science Education Council of Ohio (SECO), the Northern Kentucky Science Teachers Association (NKYSTA), the Kentucky Science Teachers Association (KSTA) or the Hoosier Association of Science Teachers (HAST).

Three people should be designated as tri-chairs, one representing instruction in each of Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana.

COMMITTEE OBJECTIVES:

  1. Provide representation for each state's biology teachers
  2. Represent each state's curriculum goals and objectives
  3. Provide suggestions for new exhibits, new ways to use existing exhibits, ...
  4. Provide on-going review of exhibit instructional label guidelines and exhibit narrative overview guidelines.
  5. Help write, review and critique exhibit instructional labels and narrative overviews
  6. Provide suggestions for programs and services that could become part of the GCSEC
  7. Promote and publicize the GCSEC concept and GCSEC events
  8. Assist with GCSEC events when available, including soliciting volunteers

Other objectives may be added as the need arises.

COMMITTEE PROCEDURES:

The committee should try to meet as a whole about every two months. It is expected that regular communication would be via e-mail. Communication between the GCSEC and the committee would normally be through the tri-chairs. Material being reviewed by the committee, such as exhibit instructional labels, could be posted on an unlinked page of the GCSEC web site that is not advertised to the general public. That would allow the committee members to see and print (using their web browser) rough draft materials that could include diagrams, pictures and other graphics.
