GCSEC EXHIBIT LABEL ADVISORY COMMITTEE

Revised 30 December 1998

This advisory committee was the first, organized in the fall of 1998. Observations of students and adults interacting with the exhibits during the Concept Demonstration Project showed that the maximum educational potential of these interactive exhibits was not being realized with the initial labels.

Literature research was conducted on exhibit labels, informal learning and the museum experience. Discussion was also pursued on an informal education list serv. A small number of teachers and people with museum experience were asked to design guidelines for a new approach to exhibit labels.

The result of this effort was a set of guidelines for writing exhibit labels. These guidelines are can be found by selecting the EXHIBITS category on the GCSEC home page. Like all other committee reports, these guidelines are a work in progress. Based on this work, a new label is being written for each of the exhibits. The reactions and opinions of visitors to these labels will continue to be monitored and evaluated. The guidelines likely will be modified and labels revised throughout the Concept Development Project.
