GCSEC EXHIBIT OVERVIEW GUIDELINES

Version 1.0 2 January 1999

During the Concept Development Project, the GCSEC will have several weekend events where its sample exhibits will be available to the general public. There will also be a few events where the some of the exhibits are used in a school setting. During these events the GCSEC will utilize volunteers as exhibit explainers. An established GCSEC would have an active group of regular volunteers that participate in organized training programs to become exhibit explainers. But during this project, creation of a permanent trained group of volunteers is not possible.

The exhibit overviews are intended to provide sufficient background information so that a new person wishing to volunteer during the Concept Development Project can obtain sufficient background information on individual exhibits to function as an exhibit explainer. These volunteers can download the overviews in advance to gain some familiarity. Alternatively, volunteers can take just a few minutes to study them at the start of their volunteer period.

In addition, these exhibit overviews will be available during events to see how many visitors might be interested in more information than what is contained in the exhibit labels and whether the overviews provide sufficient additional information.

The overviews should be written for the typical tenth grade student. They should include vocabulary listed on Guidelines for Exhibit Label Challenge Questions through the tenth grade level.
